Privacy Policy · Version 2026-10-24
Your memories stay on your iPhone.
This Privacy Policy explains how the Chie app for iPhone, its Share extension, and the chie.house website handle information. Chie is made by NIXA Inc. (“NIXA”, “we”, “us”).
The short version
- We don’t collect your memories. Everything you save in Chie is stored on your iPhone. NIXA does not run a server for Chie and never receives what you save.
- No account, no ads, no tracking. Chie has no sign-in, shows no advertising, contains no analytics or advertising software, and does not track you across apps or websites.
- We will never sell your information or use it for advertising.
- Built on Apple’s protections. Chie runs only on Apple devices and relies on Apple’s on-device security, Face ID and Touch ID, Apple Intelligence and iCloud. Those protections are provided by Apple under Apple’s own terms.
1. What this policy covers
This policy applies to Chie for iPhone, the Chie Share extension, and www.chie.house. It does not cover apps, websites or services you choose to open, share to or back up to, such as a website you saved, the app you share a memory with, or your iCloud account. Their own policies apply.
2. Information that stays on your device
The following is created and stored only on your iPhone, in Chie’s private storage. NIXA has no access to it.
- What you save: text, web links, photos, screenshots and PDFs you add in Chie or share into it from other apps.
- What you add: your notes, favorites, and items in Trash.
- What Chie works out on your device: text read from your photos and PDFs, automatic photo descriptions, your search index, and the interests used to choose “Today in history” events.
- Settings: your choices for the lock, link previews, Today in history, iCloud backup and photo size.
Text recognition uses Apple’s Vision framework on your device. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, photo descriptions and the choice of history events use Apple’s on-device language model; Chie does not send this content to NIXA or to any other company for processing. Photo descriptions are labeled as automatic, can be wrong, and are written not to identify people.
3. How Apple protects your information
Chie is available only on Apple devices because it is built on Apple’s privacy and security features rather than on servers of our own:
- Device encryption. Chie’s storage is protected by iOS Data Protection, which encrypts it using your device passcode.
- Face ID, Touch ID and passcode. If you turn on Chie’s lock, iOS checks your identity. Chie only learns whether unlocking succeeded; it never receives your face, fingerprint or passcode.
- Apple Intelligence and Translation. These run on your device under Apple’s policies. iOS may download language models or translation languages from Apple.
- iCloud. If you use iCloud backup, your backup is stored in your iCloud account and protected by Apple. Standard iCloud data protection encrypts it, and Apple holds the keys. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud in your iPhone’s settings, your iCloud Drive files are end-to-end encrypted so that only your trusted devices can read them.
Because these protections are provided by Apple, Apple’s Privacy Policy and terms govern how Apple handles your device, your Apple Account and iCloud. Keeping your iPhone updated, using a strong passcode, and protecting your Apple Account are the most important things you can do to keep Chie private.
4. When Chie connects to the internet
Chie works without an internet connection. It connects only for these features, each of which you can turn off in Chie’s Library settings:
- Link previews. After you save a link, Chie asks that website for its title and picture, the same way Messages does. The website receives an ordinary request from your iPhone, including your IP address.
- Today in history. Chie downloads the day’s historical events, and their pictures, from Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation). The request contains only the date and language. Which events match your interests is decided on your iPhone and is never sent.
- iCloud backup. Chie saves backup files of your library to Chie’s folder in your iCloud Drive. NIXA cannot access your iCloud.
When you open a saved link, share a memory, or save a backup file somewhere, the destination you choose receives it under its own policies.
5. Your photos
When you add photos with the photo picker, Chie receives only the photos you choose; it does not need access to your photo library. Chie keeps a smaller copy of each photo, with location information removed, and remembers where the original is in your Photos library.
If you tap “Full size from Photos”, iOS asks whether Chie may access your photo library. You can allow access to selected photos only, or decline; Chie keeps working either way. Photos shared into Chie from other apps are kept exactly as shared, including any information embedded in the file, such as the place it was taken.
6. Information NIXA may receive
NIXA does not receive your memories or how you use Chie. We may receive only:
- Messages you send us. If you email us, we use your message and email address to reply, and keep them only as long as needed to help you.
- Information from Apple. Apple provides app developers with aggregate App Store and download statistics. If you choose “Share with App Developers” in your iPhone’s Analytics settings, Apple may also share crash reports and usage information with us. Apple controls this, and you can turn it off at any time in iOS Settings.
- Website requests. chie.house has no accounts, cookies, analytics or advertising. Our website host, Cloudflare, processes standard request information such as IP address and browser type to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
7. What we will never do
- Sell, rent or trade your information.
- Show advertising in Chie, or use your information to target advertising anywhere.
- Track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- Include third-party advertising, analytics or data-broker software in Chie.
If Chie ever offers a feature that needs to send your content off your device, we will explain it in the app, ask for your permission first, and update this policy before the feature is available.
8. Keeping, exporting and deleting
Your memories stay until you delete them. Items in Trash stay until you restore them or delete them permanently. You can export everything as a backup file at any time from Library settings.
Deleting Chie from your iPhone deletes its library on that device. Backups you made separately are not deleted automatically: remove them from iCloud Drive (in the Files app, under Chie) or wherever you saved them. Device backups follow your iPhone and iCloud settings. Because we never hold your memories, we cannot recover them for you; please keep a backup.
9. Your rights and choices
You control your Chie data directly in the app: you can view, change, export and delete it, and turn off each internet feature, at any time. For information NIXA does hold, such as an email you sent us, you may ask us to access, correct or delete it by writing to beta@chie.house. Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights; we will honor them and will not treat you differently for using them.
10. Children
Chie is not directed to children under 13, and NIXA does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
11. Security
Chie’s security rests on your iPhone and Apple’s protections described above, plus the optional Face ID or Touch ID lock and a privacy screen that hides your memories in the app switcher. Backup files you export yourself are readable and not password protected; store them somewhere private. No method of storage is perfectly secure.
12. Purchase Intelligence beta
Before Chie for iPhone, NIXA ran a separate web beta called Purchase Intelligence. It is closed and no longer collects information. Records from that beta are covered by its own Privacy Policy. To ask about or delete beta records, write to beta@chie.house.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change how Chie handles information, we will update this policy and its version date. For material changes, we will tell you in the app or on this site before they take effect.
